Northeastern Log Homes Model in Westfield, Massachusetts showcases contemporary interior design options for easy, elegant living
Northeastern's model log home in Westfield, Massachusetts showcases a spectrum of design ideas for anyone considering a traditional log home that has a touch of elegance.
The model was designed to be a real eye opener for those who are thinking about building a log home and want to see the decor, color schemes, and wall and window treatment options that are compatible with the contemporary log home.
While the architecture and overall theme is traditional, Northeastern worked with Interior Design firm J/Brice Design International to create an element of surprise when visitors crossed the threshold. There are bold patterns, a variety of textures, contemporary flooring materials, high-end kitchen cabinets, granite countertops and low voltage lighting on display. The model gives consumers an opportunity to see how various colors and patterns can be incorporated with natural wood to enhance their own dream home plans. Example -- some of the beams are finished with a light forest green wash to demonstrate how contrasting color can add emphasis and punch.
Typical comments are, "I thought log homes were dark, this is bright and cheerful" or, "I was expecting Colonial furniture and rag rugs. This is different!"
Explains Gary Jordan, who heads the design team at the company's sprawling 60 acre facility in Kenduskeag, Maine, "We asked for input from dozens of customers, sales associates and manufacturing employees to understand what today's log home buyer wants. Overwhelmingly they are looking for architecture that integrates the roots of traditional log design with spaciousness and convenience." This model features first floor master bedroom suite with bath and walk-in closet, a shed dormer in the rear for a spacious second level, breezeway-mud room and two-car garage. "Part of our goal was to design a home is as livable for a family of four as it would for a couple. It was to be a dream house, but could not exceed the average cost of new homes in the area," adds Jordan.
While the farmer front porch and dormers are out of the past, Andersen Frenchwood Doors and a rear deck with composite flooring are designed for easy maintenance and contemporary living. Similarly, low-e, energy-efficient Andersen Windows that tilt for cleaning and six-panel interior Morgan doors are identical to those premium frame homebuyers demand.
The logs are assembled from a pre-cut and numbered, Easy-Build Package using three-level tongue-and-groove joinery, 12-inch spiral spikes, foam gaskets and advanced puttylastic caulking. A unique drip edge sheds rain and prevents water from seeping between the logs to minimize maintenance. This adds up to reliability, comfort and energy efficiency equal to, or better than, the most modern frame houses built in the US today. A carefully engineered, fully vented and insulated roof system with Owens-Corning 25-year roofing shingles tops off the package.
The complete Westfield model home package, including all building components, is $107,000 with garage and mudroom, without $86,250. The turnkey cost, excluding land and site preparation is about $250,000 -$ 300,000. Northeastern Log Homes kits start from as low as $28,895 while the average kit sells for about $60,000. The total or turnkey price is generally two-and-a-half to three times the kit price. Kitchen cabinets, flooring and baths are the greatest variables.
In addition to Westfield, Northeastern has fully-staffed model homes in Groton, Vermont; York, Maine, and Louisville, Kentucky. There is a showroom and factory in Kenduskeag just outside Bangor, Maine. The company sells direct to the consumer and full-time employees staff all US models and showrooms. The company has model homes in Japan and Ireland. Contact any model home or office to arrange a factory tour.
