Camp and Cabin Series Meets Outdoors Enthusiast's Demand for Modestly Priced Vacation Getaway

Northeastern worked with Field & Stream Magazine to design and build the ultimate Sportsman's Cabin.

The Field & Stream Sportsman's Cabin is the ultimate getaway model in the Camp and Cabin Series of affordable, easy-to-build log cabin kits. Northeastern, together with the editors of Field & Stream developed the Sportsman's Cabin and they have built a prototype at a game preserve in New York's Catskill Mountain region. The Sportsman's Cabin and has been featured numerous times in Field & Stream, the nation's oldest outdoor magazine.

Cabin Kits from $11,300

While the materials package for the Sportsman's Cabin retails for $33,850, Northeastern Log Homes offers other Camp and Cabin Series kits starting at $11,300 for the Explore, which is 20-by-16 feet and has a 6-by-16 foot front porch.

Other popular Series models include the 20-by-32 foot River Bend with 830 square-feet of living space on two levels, plus a farmers front porch at $18,300. The Cumberland, also 20-by-32 feet, has a wrap-around front porch and larger loft for a total of 930 square-feet of living space at $19,800. For sites overlooking a stream or mountain the Skyview, with custom glass and deck, is 20 by 32 feet and retails for $23,500. All models are sold factory direct.

Explains Rich Horn, sales manager for the Kenduskeag, Maine log home company, "By working closely with Field & Stream editors on the Sportsman's Cabin we were able to offer features most wanted for both hunting and fishing trips and active family getaways." This cabin has over one thousand square-feet of living space including two sleeping lofts joined by a catwalk. Its signature is a gabled front porch with exposed beams that may be screened-in for an additional 140 square feet of living space.

Features that make all of these cabins ideal for recreational living include open areas for gathering and dining, ample porches or decks, sleeping and storage lofts, and cathedral ceilings. With locally purchased materials, or materials supplied by Northeastern, the owner can build interior walls to create bedrooms, kitchen and baths. Suggested interior layouts and instructions are included with all models.

The rustic logs are pre-cut, notched and numbered for easy handling and speedy assembly by the do-it-yourselfer. Easy-to-follow drawings and step-by-step instructions are included. Free technical assistance is available by phone. Kits are well suited for building in remote areas and can be completed with ordinary power tools. A generator is recommended if utilities are unavailable.

Northeastern Camp and Cabin Series models are energy-efficient and eliminate air and water infiltration with a triple-tiered log joinery system using twelve-inch spiral spikes, sealed with foam gaskets, and advanced puttylastic caulking. A unique drip edge sheds rain and prevents water from seeping between the logs to minimize maintenance.

Customers provide grading, footings and foundation piers, sanitary system, utilities and plumbing as well as interior doors, stairs and walls. When built by a licensed contractor, Northeastern estimates the total cost, including the kit, to be about two-and-a-half times the kit price. Northeastern recommends obtaining competitive bids among qualified builders for construction, electrical service, plumbing, fixtures, kitchen cabinets and heating.

In addition to individuals, Camp and Cabin Models are ideal for the lodging industry. For example , at Vermont's Sterling Ridge Inn, Innkeeper Scott Peterson purchased several cabins, which are rented to guests at this year round B & B near Mount Stowe. "The cabins were so easy to build! The logs are shorter so they are easy to handle and only ordinary power tools are needed. I had absolutely no problem with delivery and we never ran out of anything," Peterson reports.

In addition to the Camp & Cabin Series, Northeastern Log Homes designs and manufactures log homes including the Premiere Home Series and The Traditional Series of starter homes. Homes may be custom-designed or selected from the company's extensive portfolio. Founded in l972, Northeastern sells direct to the consumer.
