The Forges: Page 2
Whenever Jay thought about building his own home, he knew the only kind that would suit the scenery was a log home. "Aesthetically, it fit into the landscape," he says, adding, "Several of my friends lived in log homes, and I always enjoyed the warm feeling of them."
Having worked in construction, Jay contacted a log-home builder in the area, Paul Tessier, who recommended Northeastern Log Homes Inc. Jay contacted John Quinlan at Northeastern's office in Westfield, Massachusetts, to begin designing the home. John recalls that Jay had some definite ideas for the design of his home. Above all, he wanted an open, airy layout.
The design was a customized version of Northeastern's Harborside standard plan. It features an open great room with a high ceiling, a first-floor master bedroom suite and a roomy loft with two bedrooms. The loft also has a sitting area and a smaller alcove. The total square footage is just over 1,800, although the porch and decks expand the living space. "With the French doors open, the place seems much larger," Jay says. "I'm an outdoors person, and by opening up the house I've made the outdoors part of my home."
The most distinguishing aspects of the design were installing oversized windows and adding two levels of logs to elevate the walls. One effect was to raise the porch roof higher than the windows to admit more light underneath and to expose the views from the inside. Another effect was to raise the height of the upstairs walls, allowing for bigger windows and more headroom without going to dormers. "I get sunlight in the house all day," Jay notes. "People walk in, and they can't believe how bright it is."

The cowboy look reigns supreme in the master bedroom. The room enjoys access to one of the decks.
