The Hornbecks' Family Home
Phil and Lois Hornbeck have two kids, two busy careers and a large Northeastern Log Home overlooking a lake. Their household is the center of activity for their family and all their friends.
A Dream is Born
The Hornbecks didn't start out with a log home dream. "A Hornbeck family tradition has been to visit a resort on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan every year," Phil says. "One year, on visiting this lakeside vacation spot, we found the owners had added on a log structure as part of the guest quarters." Lois and Phil were instantly intrigued. They loved the building and began picturing a small log cabin on a lake for their own family getaway.
Later on, Phil and Lois visited a home show to pick up decorating ideas and home improvement tips. Northeastern Log Homes had a display at the show and the Hornbecks, newly fascinated by log homes, took a brochure.
Not For Vacation Only
Soon, their ideas for a vacation cabin in the woods evolved into the dream of a full-time log home for year-round use. An architect friend helped turn their ideas into a floor plan. It included the deep front porch that was important to Lois, the upstairs loft area overlooking the great room (important to Phil) and the general openness that was essential to both.
With plan in hand, they went to Jon Bednarski -- a neighbor and close friend who was also a Northeastern representative -- and had their plan adapted into a custom log home.
Once complete, the Hornbeck home will offer 4,000 square feet of finished living space, including an English basement with TV room and guest quarters, a first-floor great room incorporating kitchen, dining area and living room, and a downstairs master bedroom suite. Plus Phil's upstairs loft overlooking the middle level.
Thrilled With The Results
There are still ongoing projects in the Horbeck house. They have just screened in a back porch overlooking a five-acre lake and will soon begin finishing the walkout basement. All in all, the family is thrilled with its new Kentucky home.
