The Guetigs' Countryside Dream Home
Mark and Judy Guetig built their Northeastern Log Home in the countryside just outside Louisville, Kentucky, in 1993. It was a custom plan, designed for them by Northeastern, with almost 2,000 square feet of living space. The house was built almost entirely by the Guetigs and members of their extended families.
"I have been drawn to log homes for years," Judy says. "Mark and I each had several elements that we wanted incorporated. I love bay windows and we now have two of those. We both wanted a single-story home and Mark wanted the large outside deck so we could spend lots of time around the house looking at the land." The two large fireplaces were also important.
A Visit To Northeastern's Model Home
Mark and Judy had visited many log home models and, on the suggestion of a friend, visited the Northeastern model near where they now live. "This house changed our outlook in terms of the engineering of the logs in the way that they are connected," Judy recalls. They liked the D-profile white pine logs, to which the Guetigs added three to four coats of clear polyurethane to maintain their light, bright feeling. "The flat side of the inside log gives the house a refined feeling instead of the more rustic look of large round logs," Judy says.
Made to Order
Judy and Mark made sure that the house would be light and bright by including large windows on all four sides of the house. Another essential feature is the oversized laundry room that doubles as a much-cushioned bedroom for their three dogs.
Today, they are delighted with their home, which they have decorated in a Southwest style. The result of Judy's careful planning and good decorating eye is a home that is warm and inviting, just like a log home was meant to be.
